Technically speaking, a mandrel is a tool used to support workpieces while they are being machined or shaped.

Mandrel Tool

Davion's Mandrel is the tool which supports the costing process - accurate and timely costing is a necessity for any business.

MANDREL - Cost Risk Management Software

Risk Matrix Report Example

Mandrel lets you:

  • Capture quantity uncertainties in individual costs such as labor, materials and subcontracts;
  • Capture scope uncertainties (risks) by assigning probabilities to expenditures;
  • Track both certain and uncertain costs as a function of time;
  • Show bottom-line costs, cost variances and risk exposures.

Mandrel 1

Mandrel 1 is a risk-based costing tool. It enables you to build uncertainty and risk into your cost projections, and to estimate your risk exposure.

Projects and programs have a tendency to exceed their budgets. Very often, this occurs not because of poor management but because the budget itself was insufficient.

Insufficient budgets typically result from a failure to make allowance for uncertainty. There are two basic types of cost uncertainty:

  • Quantity uncertainty:   how much will it cost to do the things you know about?
  • Scope uncertainty: what exactly needs to be done?

Mandrel lets you:

  • Capture quantity uncertainties in individual costs such as labor, materials and subcontracts;
  • Capture scope uncertainties (risks) by assigning probabilities to expenditures;
  • Track both certain and uncertain costs as a function of time;
  • Show bottom-line costs, cost variances and risk exposures.

In addition, Mandrel lets you handle a broad range of risk analysis, plus price lists, taxes, currencies, cash flow predictions, cost performance calculations, audit trails of changes, and Monte Carlo analysis setup.

Mandrel 2

Mandrel 2 provides all the capabilities of Mandrel 1, and in addition provides workgroup cooperation capabilities. It does this in a unique way that does not require a network or server infrastructure, but can be implemented on any set of independent computers which do not necessarily have to be linked by a network.

Mandrel 2 lets you create subordinate files, or ‘subfiles’, from your main file. A subfile contains a subsection of your cost breakdown structure, plus all the supporting data. You can give the subfile to another person or workgroup to develop it by expanding the structure and inserting data, just as you would with any other Mandrel file. When their input is reasonably complete, they can send the subfile back to you, and you then import it back into your main file. Everything they have added will be smoothly integrated into your file.

Subfiles can be imported back more than once, so if a subfile owner develops new information, they just send the updated subfile back to you and you then re-import it. Only the changes they have made since the last time will be added to your file.

Any subfile can itself create its own lower-level subfiles, and this process can be repeated indefinitely for as many levels as are required. The whole process can be thought of as successive delegation of parts of the costing process.
